Away in Rome

On Monday, 1 October, Subbuteo Club Berlin went to the north of Rome to meet the guys from Real Tripolitania and what we discovered there was astonishing!
After a very warm welcome, “lo presidente” Raimondo introduced us to the members present and the club rooms alike. Real Tripolitania is situated in the rooms of a day nursery and has therefore got plenty of well-lit space at their disposal.
Introduction to the House Rules / Club Rules was needed as well. Basically these are the so called Old Rules with a few little but significant twists. Normally a defending figure touching the ball or an opponent’s figure is called “back” unless the ball hit was still moving which is a foul. At Real Tripolitania touching the opponent’s figure (or ball) is ALWAYS a foul regardlessly of the object touched being stationery or moving. This leads to significantly more free kicks than usual. Close to the shooting area these can be converted directly, too. And in one of the two games witnessed even a penalty occurred which rarely happens in FISTF games. Another thing that needs a bit of time to get accustomed to is that it’s sufficient for the ball touching the shooting line instead of fully cross it before a shot at goal can be taken.
Besides the rules it’s the material used that adds to the amazement. Unpolished Heavyweight figures of old times (or at least replicas of these) are paramount. Before important matches even a “doping control” takes place by measuring the weight of the bases to make sure these are not modified beyond certain restrictions. It’s all about the abilities of the players and not a clash of material which can be quite costly if one looks at prices of suppliers of so called profi bases.
Although the house rules appear to be somewhat weird at first glance we have to admit that they make sense nevertheless. The games followed were fluent and elements of real football appeared more naturally than in the modern rules. Some really nice spin moves were on display which have virtually disappeared from modern Subbuteo. Though we don’t judge on rules as all popular rules sets have the basic principles of the game in common and that’s what really counts. He who is aware of the development of the game since it’s early beginnings back in 1947 knows that it has already changed a lot and probably will in the future.
That the guys of Real Tripolitania carry the right spirit with them showed when they staged the two official fixtures of the evening: The Italian Supercoppa and the European Supercup! And if we say „official“ we mean official as there can be no dispute about the seriousness when your club has got a sponsor, a club magazine called „la Gazzetta del Subbuteo Club“ and records the games for an international audience on YouTube including live commentary. It was an honour for our club ambassador, Nico Müller, to add a bit to the commentary in German language whilst Borussia Dortmund battled for the European Supercup. We strongly recommend to have a look on YouTube yourself! Especially the game between Borussia Dortmund and Villareal should be suited as it features Subbuteo commentary at its best in three (!) languages ;-)

It’s a shame Nico couldn’t compete with the lads himself as the official character of the club night denied it due to a fixed time schedule. Hopefully next time! Thank you very much for having Subbuteo Club Berlin! Everyone is invited to visit us in Berlin wholeheartedly! Keep on flicking!

Auswärts in Rom
Am Montag, den 1. Oktober, führte es den Subbuteo Club Berlin in den Norden von Rom, um die Jungs von Real Tripolitania zu treffen. Und was wir dort vorfanden, war verblüffend!
Nach einem sehr herzlich Willkommen stellte uns “lo presidente” Raimondo die anwesenden Club-Mitglieder vor und zeigte die Räumlichkeiten. Real Tripolitania spielt in einem Kindergarten und hat daher große und gut ausgeleuchtete Räume zur Verfügung.
Eine Vorstellung der Hausregeln / Club-Regeln war ebenfalls nötig. Im Grunde handelt es sich hierbei um die sogenannten Alten Regeln mit ein paar kleineren, aber sehr signifikanten Abwandlungen. Normalerweise wird für die Verteidiger-Figur, die den Ball oder eine gegnerische Figur berührt, ein “Zurück” verlangt, außer der vom Verteidiger berührte Ball war noch in Bewegung, was ein Foul darstellt. Bei Real Tripolitania ist JEDE Berührung der gegnerischen Figur (bzw. des Balls) ein Foul, ungeachtet dessen, ob sich das berührte Objekt stand oder bewegte. Dies führt zu signifikant mehr Freistößen als üblich. In der Nähe der Schusszone können diese auch direkt verwandelt werden. In einer der beiden beobachteten Partien gab es sogar einen Elfmeter, was in FISTF-Spielen höchst selten der Fall ist. Eine andere Sache, die der Gewöhnung bedarf, ist, dass Schüsse auf das Tor schon dann abgegeben werden können, wenn der Ball die Schusslinie berührt und nicht wie sonst in vollem Umfang überschritten hat.
Neben den Regeln ist es das zum Einsatz kommende Material, welches zum Erstaunen beiträgt. Unpolierte Heavyweight Figuren der Vergangenheit (oder zumindest Repliken hiervon) sind das Maß der Dinge. Vor wichtigen Spielen wird sogar eine „Doping-Kontrolle“ durchgeführt, in dem die Sockel gewogen werden, um sicherzustellen, dass ihr Gewicht sich innerhalb vorgegebener Grenzen bewegt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Fähigkeiten der Spieler und keine Materialschlacht, die angesichts der Preise für sogenannte Profisockel leicht kostspielig werden kann.
Obwohl die Hausregeln auf den ersten Blick sonderbar anmuten, so müssen wir zugeben, dass sie durchaus einen Sinn ergeben. Die beobachteten Partien waren flüssig und hatten mehr Elemente des echten Fußballs zu bieten, als ein Spiel nach modernen Regeln. Aber wir bewerten nicht auf Basis von Regeln, da die kursierenden Regelwerke letztlich alle auf denselben Grundprinzipien beruhen und nur das ist, worauf es ankommt. Derjenige, der sich mit der Entwicklung des Spiels seit seinen frühen Anfängen in 1947 beschäftigt, weiß, dass es sich seither stark verändert hat und vermutlich auch künftig verändern wird.
Dass die Jungs von Real Tripolitania den richtigen Geist besitzen, zeigte sich allein schon an den beiden offiziellen Partien des Abends: Dem italienischen Supercoppa und dem europäischen Supercup! Und wenn wir „offiziell“ sagen, dann meinen wir das auch so, zumal es keinen Zweifel an der Ernsthaftigkeit geben kann, wenn dein Club über einen Sponsor verfügt, eine Vereinszeitung namens „la Gazzetta del Subbuteo Club“ und die Spiele zur Veröffentlichung für ein internationales Publikum auf YouTube aufzeichnet inklusive Live-Kommentar. Es war eine Ehre für unseren Club-Botschafter, Nico Müller, Kommentare auf Deutsch beisteuern zu dürfen, während Borussia Dortmund um den europäischen Supercup kämpfte. Wir empfehlen wärmstens, Euch selbst auf YouTube einen Eindruck zu verschaffen! Besonders das Spiel zwischen Borussia Dortmund und Villareal sollte geeignet sein, enthält es doch dreisprachigen (!) Subbuteo-Kommentar auf höchstem Niveau ;-)

Es ist ein Jammer, dass sich Nico aufgrund des offiziellen Charakters des Club-Abends und dem daraus folgenden engen Zeitplan nicht selbst mit den Gastgebern messen konnte. Hoffentlich klappt es beim nächsten Mal. Vielen Dank dafür, dass Ihr den Subbuteo Club Berlin zu Gast hattet. Jeder, der nach Berlin kommt, ist herzlich zu einem Besuch bei uns eingeladen.
